About:

“Why are we still here? Just to suffer?” originated from a 2015 video game called Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. This quote quickly became a catchphrase frequently used to express frustration and hopelessness in parody videos.

During the month of June in 2013, the official Konami YouTube account uploaded their official trailer for this video game, Mental Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. In the beginning of the trailer a character by the name of Kazuhira Miller asks, “Why are we still here? Just to suffer?” Upon release, this trailer has been viewed over 2.5 million times.

The video game was then released three months later, on September 1st featuring this famous line. Since its release, the game has sold more than 4 million copies as of July 2017.

Increased Popularity:

On June 26th, 2015, a YouTuber named Lukidjano posted a parody video of the same trailer, featuring this quote read by Big Man Tyrone. In the matter of two years, this parody video has been viewed over 52,000 times. Tyrone himself posted a similar video, without the famous moments from the trailer, and has received more than 100,000 views.

About a year and a half later in January of 2017, PewDiePie, a YouTuber, uploaded a parody of this famous quote in his video “Its Time to Strike Back.” In as little as six months his video has been views more than 5 million times.
