Redesigning My Logo

Hello. This is my first time on here. I am currently looking to retool my logo for my freelance design business. I started this a year ago under a fictitious name with a very simple logo. I have decided to move in another direction by using my name and redesigning the logo. I have attached several ideas I have worked up thus far. I will admit that there are a couple I am not fond of already. I wanted to come here because as helpful as my friends and family are, they are not designers. I am looking for honest opinions and advice.

Thanks!

Colin

the only one that even comes close to usable is 4. the rest are either completely overwrought or clumsily executed.

I appreciate the feedback. I actually like #4 the most to this point as well. I want something simple and clean. That is why I came here. I am looking for more than "that's cool" or "I don't get it" that you usually get from non-designers. Any suggestions for improving on 4?

I think 5 is interesting and 4 is a bit old-fashioned. 5 would be nice when blown up as a portfolio cover with your full name underneath in a thin, modern font.

@sherry.ma - something more like this?

wgzn's picture

GOOD GOD WHAT A MESS!

why isnt there a smooth transition at the bottom where the C and B meet?
why is the vertical in the B so thin?
it also looks like the stroke on the bottom of the B inst an even thickness. did you hand draw this curve? if so, WHY?

4 is DEFINITELY very 1980's but its the only mark on the page that as-is, is even close to professionally viable.

5 could be worked into something acceptable. the problems with it are:
- the varying line weights. why is any part of the icon thinner than another?
- the way the B is broken at the bottom introduces a lot of uncomfortable ambiguity. it could be a P, A or an F or a 3. im not sure what the solution is. maybe dont break it at all...

I have considered an icon, I just haven't developed any concepts yet. This was just the first round of ideas, and I'll admit that I was starting to really reach on some of these.

My goal is to develop a logo that will help me to grow my personal business as well as show potential employers that I am not just a hobbyist, but a serious designer looking to work in an agency, etc.

I seem to be able to come up with ideas for everyone else but myself.

"show potential employers that I am not just a hobbyist,"

i hate to be mean (but you asked for honest feedback) but pretty much everything on this page SCREAMS hobbyist. hackneyed concepts, sloppy execution, really, REALLY poor font choices...

you may be capable of "serious design", but this page doesnt communicate that at all.

You don't know how much I actually appreciate what you have said so far. I've been out of school for a couple of years now, but I am not currently in a "designer" position. I have done work on website content management, blast emails, basic layout stuff. That is why I have resolved to bring my work to some place like this. I need honest, knowledgeable feed back so that I can get myself back into doing serious work and improving my work and knowledge.

something like this.

"Clean and simple" does not equal "easy to execute". Challenge yourself.

Your visual expression seems to change in every logo. Why the rough stroke C inside a square? What does that mean to you? What are you trying to communicate? And why would you EVER use that font for a design business logo?

Concepts seem random, poorly executed, and you're not consequent about your visual expression that you wish to communicate.

i think that nearly everyone these days (myself included) gets hung up in initials for logo designs. have you considered some representative icon rather than CB, D?

Keep at it - they all look like first round ideas to me.

I kinda like the #7 BUT definitely without those red dots round. I can make my eyes run for the C,B & D i feel interested, and has that design character in it. With the type of #2 with type treament of #1. imo.

Sorry couldn't stop doing this.

Wow! I really like that.

wgzn's picture

good idea. but the concept falls down in all black.

and thats a long standing rule of GOOD mark design. if it doesnt work in all black. it doesnt work

Art D. Rector's picture

Remove the red pill thing and just pull a slice out of the D to make the B - red for 2 color, all black for one color. Done.

DS's picture

I can imagine that. yep its done.

Start with a pencil, Looks like you hoped right on the mouse with this one. #4 is your best bet so far. It gives you an older feel and I'd trust you with a project. Lets start with the basic first.

I too like #4 best. Although the font along side it should go. You have a very grunge feeling to the left and to the right an uncreative slapped on old bank logo text.

I think you may be able to get a "artsy" / business "with style" look if you removed the "Colin" & "Designs" and left the "Blair" in red along with the mark.

I do not prefer #5 because at a distance it looks like half of a sniper scope - combined with the blood red you are using...well you get where I am going...

I am going to stop here and ask why you are using that shade of red, and to remind you it is easiest to ADD color once you have found a logo style you wish to stick with (just a thought).

#7 seems to be using 3 different size dots, it might be more cohesive if they were all the same...plus the small slices into the ball may disappear once it gets smaller.

#2 The text in the middle is a disaster! You can not have lower case between such a horizontal structure like that. Not that that would fix the issue - the text is squished and will be GONE when this logo get's any smaller. Side note: It looks like a big "G" and "E".

I am going to stop here and ask why you have - not a tag line, but the whole name printed with every logo. Logos are marks, they define who and what you are, they tell the story. Again this might be easier if you refrained from putting the full name in (unless it REALLY must be there for a VERY good reason), because I think it takes away from the logo (in these cases) and can always be added in later - properly.

#6 - no.

#3 looks like a little bat...with a big head - maybe a "C" with a weird back problem.

Lastly #1 (funny order - sry), it reminds me of a quill pen tip, I don't think it fits...

I look forward to seeing more from you, and hope we all have helped you with this being your first time here!

Yea, I am definitely going back to the drawing board on this one (literally). I do think I rushed these too much and I was really reaching for ideas. I have been doing a lot of work with laying out emails, a book cover, etc. with a little logo work. Usually I have a specific brief to go from, but I'm obviously struggling with my own. Thanks for all of the suggestions and critiques. I'm going to take all that, do more research, and hopefully be back soon with much better work.

OK. Here is the second round of designs. I spent some time researching fonts and logos from other design companies. It looks like I am going to need to purchase or download some more fonts as right now I am working with mostly the default selection. If anyone has any good sources, I'd appreciate it.

Logo Goal: Creative, but professional. I enjoy illustrations and fun designs, but I don't want to come off as a graphics shop (flames, car graphics, etc). I am focused more on layout, letterhead, logo design, things of that nature.

I tried to keep it relatively simple while following what has already been suggested. There are a few variations that I included as a potential focus.

Ok, have at it!

How did you even dare attempting option #1. #5 you've killed it, was much better in your previous attempt. I'd rather buy #3 with the line reduce to the hight of the font.

No. It does read COLINBLAIRI

Like this, but your getting better with the sketches.

which will result in

i think not.

#5 - change to all black? Add the text back?

wgzn's picture
1278 pencils

first. STOP WORKING WITH COLOR!
get the mark right first.
these are better than the originals. but still very played out concepts.

keep sketching

Yes - keep sketching.

Will do. Next set will be only b/w.

8 is very interesting, but I can tell you haven't picked up the "primitive" tools yet again...prove me wrong, flash some sketches.

Colinb424's picture

Here's a quick sketch, but I am not totally sold on this concept. I'm trying to come up with a mark that relates to me, but doesn't include my initials (unlike this one) and/or doesn't make it look like a business it's not.

sorry, the scan quality is a little light. Probably should go with a regular "i" in design, but here's the sketch anyway.

Here is a new one that I like a lot better.

Thanks guys! I like this a lot, but you may be right. It may be too close to Rand's abc logo design.

Actual logo I did while in school...

It's a foodservice design company - commercial kitchens and such. Get it?

It's supposed to be a double sink with a faucet.

I do see it. Great design!
