Looking for a Developer

creativebits widget mock-up

We were thinking about a cb widget for Dashboard for some time with Tigerstorm. Here is a mock-up of what it should look like. It will take the 3 RSS feeds and display the titles with a small blurb for each. There would be a search tool in the top right corner.

We need a developer who can do the coding for it. I realise this takes many hours to get done, so this is a pay job. I can provide with the html and CSS file that is needed for the widget. If you know of someone with experience in developing widgets please let us know.

I want to keep it simple and useful for you, so all suggestions are more than welcome. Feature requests are welcome too, but I want to make it simple and easy to execute for version one.

For those who don't have Tiger or don't want to wait for this widget for Dashboard you can download the updated K widget with basic features here.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the highlight shouldn't go over the top of the search field. Great looking Widget so far, can't wait to beta test it out.

The mockup does look brilliant, but would it be better with a custom scrollbar ?

i'd love to help, but not sure if im actually up to the job at the mo :)

According to Apple's design guidelines (follow them or not), the scrollbar should not be an Aqua scrollbar, but a custom one such as can be found in the Wikipedia widget and others. Just a heads up.

I might be able to do it, although I can show you no other widget experience than an ugly one in development (does not involve RSS) and a quote in Wired News on the security of widgets... If no one else has contacted you to do this so far, let me know.

I heard that widgets can be made with flash. If this is the case I can DEFINITELY handl the rss feeds. I've created a couple rss readers at work using flash already. I'll look into it.

Would be good if flash was supported for the obvious visual reasons. BUT Flash player isnt the best thing since slice bread for macs, and i would be very reluctant to install a flash widget purely because they shouldnt be there to slow down my machine.

Yeah, I noticed that the flash player doesn't render as high of FPS as on my windows machine. Any idea why its like this?

I have noticed that optimizing my scripted annimations helps with the mac player a lot, especially when using the "setinterval" annimating style instead of the keyframes.

Once the main css is built, the widget could built sort of easily by using code from other widgets that have a rss reader. the three button thing would be pretty simple to accomplish, you have 3 divs and use javascript to hide / show the div. The search isnt a problem either, do you remember the first cb search widget that was posted, but didnt work? Well i fixed it but never uploaded it to here. I wouldnt like to promise you a date that I could get it done by but... i'll give it a go.

Am i right in thinking that the widget will:

have 5 or 6 topics in the rss of each section (home forum critique)
the search simply searching the whole of CB

if i get a chance today I'll play about and see what Im able to do.
