First time caller to this nice site, question about creating ebooks...

Hi all, I need to start designing ebooks for a client but specs are shady.

Eventually the books will end up in iTunes or other service, and my only experience is in reading them. I am skilled in InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator/etc. so I suspect I would be working there. Are there ebook templates somewhere in InDesign? I've created interactive PDFs using Indesign and that worked great, but not sure if there is a spec or standard on ebooks...it's a hard search term to sort out! Well, thx for any tips or pointers. Cheers,

ePub would likely be a good place to start. It's a standard format which is used across a variety of e-readers (including apple's iBooks).

There's an interesting run-through from Adobe here: http://blogs.adobe.com/digitaleditions/indesign-epub.html

You mention that the books 'will end up in iTunes or other services' - this will have an impact on how you produce them. Adobe are betting on their 'digital editions' system which looks like it can cover everything from one-off or subscription apps (like the recent wired ipad app) to ePub documents.
