Creating a website

I want to set up a website and need to know what it entales. Probably a dumb question considering the recent joke posted about the ease of creating a site. I have a cause that I want to pursue and would like to be able to set up a site on the internet where it will be widely seen. Is that possible? Best question what would I be looking at for cost? I want to be able to set up an outline for trying to catch money scammers from Africa. I want to set up a place people can go for advice, to give tips about scams, share their stories, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe someone can even direct me to a site like that, that already exists.

For your site, it really

For your site, it really depends on how much design and web experience you have and on what sort of resources you want to put into the site.

A good option might be setting up a blog. Wordpress and google (to name but two) offer free blogs (though they will add ads to them) which can be quickly set up and configured to your tastes and requirements. They are limited in some ways (the address of the site for example) but their speed of set-up and cost (free) is second to none.

An option up from that is buying some web-space from a provider who offers automatic installations of software. I use dreamhost (again just one example) who offer one click installs of blogging and forum software. This means that you never have to touch code, but can have a site with a specifically chosen url with the minimum of fuss. This option will cost you though, for the registration of the url (address) and the hosting plan.

The third option is to get a web developer/designer to build something for you. This will still require expenditure on a domain and hosting, but a designer/developer may be able to talk you through this. On top of that you will have the designers costs - these will vary with the designer and with the specifications of the project. Always work with the designer to spell out to both of you exactly what is required before work starts on the building and design part of the project - this will save both of you time, expense and headaches.

The last option is to train yourself to build sites. It's the slowest, but most rewarding. W3schools (www.w3schools.com) have lots of tutorials to take you through the basics and on to far more advanced topics.

Hope that helps.

Do you know about sites such as Snopes.com and Scambusters.org and the Federal Trade Commission site, whose publication "Con Dot Com" is an excellent consumer alert (not just for Americans). You might want to provide links to them so you don't have to duplicate what they're already doing so well when creating your unique content.

Was not aware

Thank you mara for the information. I was not aware of those sites I will check them out. I am just really peaved about the situation right now and feel like I should do something or at least want to do something. I have been scammed prior and I am in contact with someone who is currently trying to scam me (both from Africa), so this is personal. Again thank you for the information. I really appreciate it!
