3 Dog North Christmas Card

3dogmama's picture

This year's 3 Dog North Design Christmas Card. Let me know if this works or where it's lacking or...whatever.

Top is front of card. Bottom section is inside message.

I think it's the snow dog's ears that are bothering me, but if I make them pointed the thing starts looking like a vampire bat or a cat. Also, if I tuck the tail between the dog's spread legs the snow angel looks like it belongs to Mr. Holmes (and I'm not talking Sherlock).

...whatever

I guess I don't see a connection between the image and the words, I don't know why the logo in on the cover, and the circle around the image creates too much tension.

Wait, that's suppose to be a dog?

I'm not seeing a dog in the snow angel, it looks kind of like a rabbit-person with a long tail. . .sorry. The front image just isn't working.

I like the little illustration of the dog collar, though. Why not just illustrate a holiday-clad dog (or something else) on the front?

One other thing -- the font "Windsong" or whatever your version is called, has really weird spacing, so you'll probably have to manually adjust it (ie. the "T" in "to" is touching the "L" in "will").

Thanks. No one else I've sent it to is seeing the dog either.

Might attempt a sideways version, but if that looks even more like a dog's breakfast then it's back to the drawing board tonight...

Hadn't even noticed the kerning issue--first time trying out that font. Thanks for the eagle eyes!

have to agree, but perhaps

have to agree, but perhaps if instead it were you and the kids making snow angels... or a cartoon of a dog making the angel... it's just too abstract otherwise. also you only have two token snowflakes on the OFC which don't lend very much to the holiday feel of it.

Geez...

I must be having a long day cause I saw th edog. Well, I saw a creature with long ears and a tail anyways. Kinda freaked me out! Is there something you want to tell us 3dog? This is the first image that came to mind: In a loose cartoon style, have the twin angels in the snow, but you're gonna have to show the dogs angel in a different way. Then maybe have the person and dog standing next to the angels looking at them Personality in the dog is key here, as it's a cartoon. I really hope that helps cause the idea is gold!

The font could be something really simple, a serif perhaps. Maybe gold lettering?

For clarity

it's not so much that I can't see the dog, as that I have to be looking for a dog to recognize it in the image. a person's first thought is always going to be "snow angel" (if they know what one is, not everyone lives where it snows)
The wings are the most dominantly recognizable part of this photo and even then it takes a moment to realize what you're looking at: "what am I looking at? oh it's snow... ah, it's a snow angel!"

I didn't really look beyond "snow angel" to "snow angel dog". once I knew it was snow, the tail and ears got discounted as "noise". Your footprints, the places where your hands were placed as you got up after making it, random snow movement during the creation of it, etc.

the reason the recognition takes so long, is because there is no point of reference. A bundled up, rosey cheeked child would provide this reference. especially an action shot with arms and legs motion blurred slightly, while laughing.

I did it too

I once made the same mistake, so don't feel bad: I took this wild photo of icicles on a branch after an ice storm and made a christmas card with it. It was close-up and tight and no one recognized it because there was no frame of reference.

Other great ideas....thanks

Other great ideas....thanks for the input, everyone.

And yeah, Leaky, you've got issues 'cause you're the ONLY one who saw my rabbit man (loved that description, Stephanie--and that's exactly what it looks like).
I may now have to blow this one off until Sunday but will re-post the new design.

dpc, I agree with your point about the oval...it is constricting the design, now that I'm looking at it from a sober point of view. Too much Bing and booze while designing can really tilt your world.

Cheers.

I saw the rabbit man/dog in the snow. I didn't know what it was until I read the inside. Very clever. Just come back to it later. I like where you're going with it though. Could you get your dog to lay back down in the snow instead and then make a reference to snow angels in your copy? Just throwing out ideas.

Thanks, Pokie. I'm actually contemplating on tossing one of my one dogs in the snow and then juggling a ball to get his legs and tail moving....
If anything, we'll have a bit of foolish snow play time!

I have decided to go with

I have decided to go with the illustration as it stands now and change the inside copy to:

(sung to the music of "O Christmas Tree")

Oh Rabbit Man, oh Rabbit Man
Thy limbs are so unnerving;
Oh Rabbit Man, oh Rabbit Man
Thy tail is that of a mutant;
Not only strange when winter's here,
But also when 'I'm drinking beer.
Oh Rabbit Man, oh Rabbit Man
I hope you keep very far from me!

Going to toss the border collie now...

It was crunch time...had to get something in the mail today.
The three words at the bottom are in the same font and colour that I brand on all of my materials. However, on my biz material, they read: "Sit. Stay. Create." rather than the card's "Sit. Stay. Celebrate."

The snow dog idea is not dead. I will go for it next year, but hopefully begin a little sooner. (ha, yeah right)

Thanks, Pokie. It's not a post card but I had considered producing it as such. It's a fold-over 5x7, with my logo centered on the back. Inside each one, I handwrote my message and signed my name.

The only wrinkle on this job was the card stock that the stationary store swore would work on my colour laser printer (didn't have time to send it to a local digital supplier for output). The card stock was a nightmare of results so I ended up at the nth hour outputting them on 28lb laser paper.
