Unhappy with logo element

Unhappy with logo element

Good Day all

My First post. I must say I really like the site

Attached is my employers logo. The finger print used to identify the name Personalized Image.
In essence I can agree the logo adds to the name Personalized however I find the logo troublesome!
Firstly It has too much detail for a logo. When viewing from a distance it looks like a blob.
Secondly the gradient from yellow to red I find rather bad. It just doesn’t have a corporate feel to it.

Is there any advise/criteria you can give me for this logo as I really struggle to design with it.
Should it be reworked making the finger print more stylized and simple.
Im busy designing a smallish outdoor sign and will post it at a later stage
What are your thoughts!?

Your concerns are validated. I don't even know where to start with this one.

Ditto to pokie's comment, plus do it all up in black and white. Drop the yellow-red blend until the base version is in place and rework the logo in several versions...basically, doodle your little heart out.

couple of thoughts.

if you want to keep the fingerprint, simplify it. it doesn't have to be an accurate actual fingerprint. it just has to have enough of the ridges to give the idea of a fingerprint.

start over with the text. way too much leading, too much kerning, and it looks too much like one of those old label maker fonts.

I agree with the above comments. You could keep the fingerprint if you or your employer really wants to, but don't be so literal. Stylize and simplify. The fingerprint and finger print concept has been overdone, but what hasn't? However, there is nothing wrong with taking a different approach either. I think of detectives and archiving companies when I see a fingerprint -- not a printing company, though I see their original concept.

I agree about the text. . . start completely new. Have fun with it, this looks like a fun project!

I agree that the fingerprint concept has been overdone. More than that though, I think this is a poorly executed concept for all of the above reasons. If you are going to stick with this logo concept, then it needs to be started over from scratch for it to work.

Is "personalized image printers" the name of the co? or is that a description of what they do? if it's a name I should be able to tell immediately and I can't...

Also, never overlay important high detail objects, such as text, onto other important high detail objects. Always keep visual contrasts in mind, if you can't avoid overlaying two high detail objects then the one behind has to be blurry, transparent, darker, or an opposite color with the more important object in front and maybe with a drop-shadow, glow, to provide that seperation.

In addition to all the other comments (i agree with all of them) there is no hierarchy in this one, give one element the center stage, the fingerprint i would say, but right now, they're all yelling "look at me first!" it just feels soo goood to ignore something that's begging for attention!

This isn't a logo, not even close. It's more of a sketch of a thought for an idea on a logo. Keep going, though, you'll come up with more original concepts with some effort.

Search for "What is a logo" on this website for a great thread on what a logo is.

Try shrinking either of these logos down and you'll see neither is appropriate for small printing, and won't really scale up well either.

As everyone here knows, the first thing out of my mouth is (wait for it jhouse!) DO YOUR LOGO IN BLACK AND WHITE FIRST. :) No backgrounds. No colors. No blends/gradients. They just distract you from your goal.

Did you read his post, Nato? ;)

Yep. I keep seeing the word "logo" in this post when it clearly is not quite there yet.
