Type tips for indents and bullet points

Can anyone give me any type tips for using indents. In Quark I used to be able to use the key next to shift to then align any text that flows underneath it. I have been using the indents with the -indents in InDesign but now I want to indent the whole body of text in I can seem to do it.
Has anyone got any tips for indents using bullets?

Thanks

Did you try the Tab palette?

Hi ya. Thanks for your response.
Yep I have used the left indent to set the main body of text across and the first line bullet point, then a tab to tab the first line across, it is the rest of the para that I then need to put in line with that tab which is the start of my copy (minus the bullet point). Don't want to tab accross each line as it is in the middle of the sentance.
Difficult to explain.

Shift + \ might be what you're after.

It puts an invisible 'something' on the line, so that when you shift-return the text is lined up...

Thanks for this although when I shift &\ I get a strange character come up and it doesn't work.
I need it so I don't have to press return and it will just flow in line. So annoying as I used it all the time in Quark.

Ta but :-(

Instead of tabbing each line, select the block of text, and then move the margin on the tab pallet.

I think what you are looking for is Command - Backslash (or Pipe).

Place your curser where you'd like the text to indent to, and hit these keys. The second line of the bulleted text will then flow to that point.

Thanks for sharing that tip

For crying out loud, I've been doing it the hard way for a long time!

Sounds like a handy alternative to Style Sheets for a quick fix on the go. I'll have to try it sometime. Funny how you can do something for a million years and not realize there are alternatives that other people have been doing for a million years, and so on.

set up paragraph styles, and only apply the indent ones to the text you want indented....that's the easiest way....

I agree. Style sheets rule!
