Questions about the blog
sPECtre (110 points) | Sun, 2004-08-08 20:50Hello, Ivan! I was wondering if the blog is hosted at one server that belongs to you.
It is linked to the blogger network. How do you upload pictures to the blog, do you use their Chat program, or are they hosted on your server?
I'm starting a blog myself, mostly to play with/learn HTML and CSS... but I might get addicted to blogging :D

Yes, i'm using http://blogger.com, which is good, but there are better options out there. Blogger lack couple of feautes that I'd like to have. For example there is no possibility for categories. The commenting is quite ackward, etc. The commenting can be solved with third party solutions, but the current comments would be lost.
With the free account on blogger you can't post pictures. For a small fee however you can upgrade to bloogger pro, where all options will be open. I have an account with http://brinkster.com which is linked to blogger, so blogger takes care of the database of the blog and uploads it to the server. It's a solution, but if I was gonna set up CreativeBits now, I would do it through one of the more full featured and complex engines, that would be independent from blogger.
You might want to try these little applications for OS X, that will enable you to constuct your message off-line. Also here is an alternative to blogger: Movable Type. Drupal is great too, but it's hard to get it installed, but it has much more than just a blog engine. However most hosting companies will do the installation for you for free or a minimal charge. Ask them.
Forget MovableType, they have gone to a strange pay system, plus the install is a pain. WordPress has a fast install great features and IMO beats MoveableType hands down, on features and price (its free :) ). Although it does not have a big as a user community as MoveableType does, but who needs 1million and a half poorly made plugins and 1million and a half 3rd party tutorials on installing the beast.
got code?
thanks for the tip. does it have trackback, categories and a proper comment system? also, how difficult it is to install? is it more difficult than a forum like this one?
It has catagories, a really nice comment system, and trackback. The install is great, assuming you have a MySQL database already setup, all you need to do is upload the files to the host and instead of like other systems you need to make sure you have everythign in place and all the proper versions of MySQL and php ..etc..etc you just type in a simple web address and it walks you thru getting all the permissions correct and making sure you have the proper database setup.
If you ever need any help I would be more then willing to help out, the nitty gritty part of computers is my specialty :)
got code?
thanks for the offer, i might give it try later on actually.
