OSX Leopard

What do you all think of the Leopard preview?

Looks to me like a lot of unnecessary eye-candy; trying to bring more windows users over without giving anything more to pro users.

Speaking of windows, I would swear those demo videos were for microsoft if it wasn't for the shiny white computers at the beginning.

Oh well.

There aren't going to be that many groundbreaking features any more because the OS has reached maturity in usability.

What you will see now is a lot of innovation that while may seem like eye-candy is more related to productivity and changing the way that we interact with the computer.

The fact is, it's going to have to compete with Windows on some level and most of the features they demoed like Stacks and Quicklook are useful unlike the majority of Vista eye-candy... Who really needs transparent windows? I sure as hell don't need a UI sucking memory for an alpha channel.

The fact is, although OS X is a new os for Apple, it's based on NEXTSTEP which was released in 1989. Apple while developing OS X had, and still have for that matter a lot of unused features from NeXT that it's been easy to add as and when needed.

What more do you want from Leopard?

I'm struggling to see what else it needs really badly.
Tiger has been a brilliant OS, far better than Panther or Jaguar as far as utilities and stability go. Leopard is just building on that foundation.

People always seem a bit disappointed after the WWDC OS announcements, I remember people throwing their toys out of the pram because Tiger didn't look that different and nobody cared much about dashboard.

I agree with you. Tiger is a great OS, and I really don't have a need for anything more in terms of features.
I'm just not convinced that big glossy buttons and reflected document previews actually increase productivity.

Why?

I don't know. Someone Please tell me.

I will be very disappointed if the Menu Bar doesn't have an option to turn off the transparency

I prefer it like that if I'm honest, the constant white block at the top of the screen does annoy me sometimes, although it's much better than the awful Aqua stripes that it used to have.

On the other hand, if you have a bright color underneath it, it could be distracting.

We'll have to wait and see.
