Need some graphics designers opinions
NitroPye (36 points) | Thu, 2004-08-12 14:22I have gotten a lot of web development jobs just falling into my lab all over the place, so I decided I was going to try to make this as full time as I can. But I am still at that point where I am doing a big morgage or university with some dynamic content but ill still get joe schmoe and his mom and pop business as well. I am no good at the small ones, so I would like some thoughts on this incredibly simple site. So simple and its priced so low I didnt even get around to a javascript popup window for the thumbnails, but what I most concerned about is the design. The drop shadow around the outter box worries me , and how about the colors? If your using safari you will see drop shadow around <h1> tags :) a little underused css property only safari supports right now.
and well I started revamping my site, only the main index page works as of now, but Ill be getting the rest up as soon as I have time .. things that worry me about this page are, the symbols the the left, and does the fox illustration need a dropshadow anywhere?
Credit given where credit is due, I wish i did the illustrations but those are the handy work of my girlfriend, I can barely write me own name let alone illustrate, its so bad when I am sketching out a layout for her to see, she more often then not just says "please use some basic shapes in photoshop or something i cant understand what your making"
got code?

the first one gives: Error - 404
your site is obviously work in progress:
i really like the fox
i really don't like the icons on the top left
otherwise it's too early to say more...
sorry :?
Damn 404! Fixed link http://www.nitroy.com/cole/Files/Temp/Stump/
Don't be sorry I am looking for some flat out smacks in the face as far as design is concerned. The icons on the left, well lets just say I am too ashamed to say what they are .. a million bucks to anyone can guess as to what they are.

don't be so hard on yourself :)
some site don't need to be amazingly creative. they should just do the job for the budget, that's it. you don't need to bring down the stars for every client.
however, you do need to get that pop-up window for this site.
*ROTFL!!!!* Wow, I hadn't seen Zingbats in awhile. (Now, with a $million, I won't have to worry about paying full price for that Photoshop upgrade! ) But seriously...
I like your page, and the lil fox is absotively adorable. (Nope, I wouldn't shadow 'im.) Might want to correct a couple typos, though just toss another "l" into "initialy" and "liscence" should be "license."
Re: the Timber site, VERY nice for a simple site. I like the colors, but the shadow round the outer box bugs me, too. (Think I'd either make it solid or lose it.) The thumbnail for the middle image in the second row - the one that links to http://www.nitroy.com/cole/Files/Temp/Stump/img/5.jpg - isn't displaying right now. (Temporary glitch, maybe?)
And, actually, I prefer no popups for images, when they load quickly on a small site (as these do, even over my humble dial-up connection). Hitting cmd+[ to back up seems more convenient to me than having to close a second window; and when I cmd+click in Safari, I *want* the image to show up in another tab, not as a separate window. Those may be personal quirks o' mine, but wanted to let you know that at least some folks will appreciate the way you have it set up now. (So it may not be worth the extra work pop-ifying 'em?)
Just my 2¢ worth. :)
