Logo Design
cissabrandao (150 points) | Sun, 2008-01-27 00:04This is for a color theory class.
I have to bring some ideas for a logo for this luxury hotel in Barcelona, Spain.
I was trying to incorporate the style of the hotel, which is a fusion of tradition and modernity. I used mosaics from tiles. I am afraid that maybe the mosaics look more Moroccan than Spanish.
What do you think?

The colors are nice and the logos aren't bad either. However, even though this is for a color theory class, you really should start in black and white so you can get your logo together first. Then add color.
Spain has a lot of Persian history imbued in it so it's not a stretch to have mosaic tile looks in your logos. Morocco is nearby (across the straight of Gibraltar) so influence from there is also not far fetched.

I think your right in thinking that the design looks very Moorish. This sort of thing is more associated with southern Spain, Andalucia especially, which might make people think it's in the south of the country, or that the hotel has an overtly Moorish theme (when it's a boutique hotel).
Barcelona is the capital of Catalan country, a region that spreads from Barcelona up into Perpignan in France, and the people who inhabit this area are extremely proud of this heritage. If you ever go there you'll see the yellow and red of the Catalan flag every where.
My advice would be to seek the opinions of a Spainish designer (must be one CB) who would be better in explaining these regional differences, which could save you a lot of work in the future.
As for the logo it's self only the version with the red type face works for me. The typeface in the top right version was popular a few years ago for Jazz/Hip Hop club flyers/posters, avoid for a European market. The bottom right is too Art Deco. Top left has the best colour combo, but the type is very unbalanced.
Looking at images of this hotel it is so modern a more up to date type face is needed, but big congrats on getting a job like this, as Barcelona has a very vibrant design community at the moment.
Cheers
I'd say its Spanish enough, you dont' want to bore the eye with re-hashed Spanish style, but rather give the idea of it and abstract it a little. That being said, I agree with Ronk witht he bottom middle one. Maybe try working some different colors or different shades into the logo for some contrast, then just keep the type simple and one color.
