logo contests - what's the background?

i'm not asking if there's palgiarism in logo contests. and i'm not asking if those logo contest on the web are bad for the business. but i'm asking if you know how those contest really work.

there are a couple of reasons why to pose that question:

1. those logo contest sites have new contests every day
2. i took part in (online) logo contests, but never won.
3. some designers win more than often.

i agree that spec work is usefull for young designers to gather experience. we also have to consider the fact that spac work is reality. you can't forbid people from taking part in logo contests.

it is not my intention to compromise anybody, but it's strange how those contest sites work smoothly, if you know what i mean.
