Inner-Office Communication

sirmortimer's picture

hey all,

i wanted to ask everyone if you know any LAN-based chat/communicator for use within small environment like an office?

In another words:
I recently became art director and I am overseeing couple of people that are sitting within the same office LAN network. Most of them is also listening to music on their headphones and i have to yell and throw objects at them when i want their attention. I'd like to be able to poke them with one click and also send a file if necessary...

Thanks,

www.google.com/chat

http://www.google.com/talk/

Or get gmail email addresses and talk within the email web client. VERY convenient.

If you're on macs just use your iChat; comes with the computer.

IM

Wouldn't a simple IM program work? Microsoft Messenger or AIM? Meh....just a though. Thats what we use in the office and it does the job.

Seconding iChat...

with an AIM account. Signing up for AIM is easy, quick and you can use your own email address as your login username. You can also configure it to work with Google Talk.

I use iChat all day, its great.

Or use meebo.com once your accounts are set up; web based interface and you can chat on several networks at once.

Don't know how he does it,

Don't know how he does it, but our IT guy is usually able to pop up a chat window on my screen anytime he has some questions for me or needs to "posses" my machine to do some work on it. I get the impression it's a simple apple application, but I don't know how he does it.

I really don't think it's an app like iChat or IM or anything like that since corporate is pretty paranoid about having those kinds of applications on our machines.

It might be a server-specific application, though.

First off - thanks for all

First off - thanks for all the responses.
I forgot to mention two things: a) i am working in mac-only environment b) i don't want to install stuff like AIM or Yahoo Messanger.
I am looking for solution that was mentioned above by KellyR - just a simple pop up window communication. On PC there was something called LAN chat and I think that's what i am looking for.
Thanks again for all the responses.

We use instant messaging

We use instant messaging that comes with our Lotus Notes... oy. It's not as bad as it sounds.

My husband's work uses iChat. iChat should come with your mac.

just use iChat !!

IChat has Bonjour chatting built in, just press command-3

zero configuration required, and you can do the video, chat and screen sharing.

No external account required.

Secure Options

You could use just about any IM service to accomplish what you want. However, if the information that you are trying to share is something that you only want people within your organization to see then I would recommend looking into some Secure Instant Messaging options.
