yeah, sure - we all do work for free! how about you come install some solar panels on my house and i'll help you come up with a name?
life is great; without it, you'd be dead.
I recommend HIRING a designer to help you with that. What you are asking for COSTS MONEY.

Tell me this guy is kidding. Sad part is I'm sure he's going to find some poor sap to take advantage of.

We artists are indestructible, even in a prison cell or concentration camp I would be almighty in my own world of art. Even if I had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell. - Pablo Picasso
i'll take some free solar panels and a geothermal water heater while we're at it..
nothing like asking for something free from professionals right?

Slogan:
"Because we were to lazy to put ANY thought into our name, and tried to mooch free advice from professionals but it didn't work."
There's my two cents. Hope it helps.

Seems to be a common theme around here lately. :(

I guess it's hard for some people to stay positive.

We shouldn't attack a person like that. Maybe their motives were selfish and sneaky, and maybe they weren't. We don't know that, but it's not nice to assume the worst of a person instead of assuming maybe they didn't know that it's bad etiquette to solicit that kind of help without offering some sort of compensation.
A gentle "we don't do that here, but here's some references" would have sufficed - it would also improve the atmosphere of this board more.
I would agree with you except of the people who make posts like this, most know better (and most are also spam without any sort of follow through).
You are 100% correct that we can say this without using negative language/attitude.

Perhaps when newcomers discover us, and feel they can pose questions like this, we could simply say that we're designers and that what they're looking for would be more of a business consultant sort of thing; it's a decision that's normally made before designers get involved. That would get us off the hook. (I know many of us *do* get involved with our clients to the extent of helping them with their company's name, but I doubt that it's routine.)
In the United States, there are local offices of the federal Small Business Association, often on campuses of community colleges, that give free advice and useful referrals to start-ups to help them develop their business plans. Naming the company is part of that process. It comes before design, which is where we come in.
In my region of Virginia, there's an organization of retired professionals in many fields who volunteer to help start-ups with all kinds of specialized services, including business-plan development and marketing. There might be similar organizations elsewhere, and not just in the U.S., so we could suggest that as a resource, too.

Mara,
You have great wisdom to your reply. Thanks for calming us down.
