Best External Hard Drives for Mac
The Letter D (29 points) | Tue, 2009-11-17 01:40Hey everyone, I'm finally in the market for an external hard drive and I'm trying to find the best ones that work well with macs.
I know a lot of you out there have them and I'm hoping for some buying advice. I'm looking for nothing bigger than 500GB and looking to spend around $100.
Thanks for your help.

If it doesn't sell, it isn't creative.

Actually I think the prices and quality are really close to each other nowadays. I wouldn't spend much time researching this question. Just go with the one available to you.
Pick a reliable brand and not the bottom priced ones. For me, the data on the harddrive is worth more then the harddrive itself.
Check out amazon reviews - it gives you a good idea where failure rates seem to be higher, what the gripes are and where the gooid customer service is.
Any drive will work with a mac, you may need to re-format it, but disk utility will handle that for you.
$100US should get you a 1GB external. if you shop carefully, even less than that. i have a 1GB buffalo linkstation live NAS, which is connected to my network via ethernet cable, which cost me less than $100. works great. has both ethernet and USB connections.
Hadn't realised that such things existed - looks like exactly what I've been after for a while! Thanks.
