Backup Program Icon
Enigma (29 points) | Wed, 2005-09-07 04:37This is an icon for a backup program currently in development. Its name is "Lifeboat", hence the icon. The preview should give you some idea of what it looks like at different sizes and on different colors.
Ignore the JPG artifacts though, the real one is lossless.

It looks pretty sleek and cool, yet compact enough for use as an icon. If I'm the client, I would be pretty satisfied...
Very very nice, though I will point out that it's almost identical to the Help Viewer application in OS X.
How about putting it at more of an angle, and perhaps make the rings a bright orange (or some other alert/rescue color) instead of grey.
That was my immediate thought. Naturally, it makes sense.
Your work on it is very good though.
Bright orange or any other color would work better in my opinion for the stripes. For example if the company's logo has green you may use that.
The company's logo actually is that color of blue. I'll play around a bit with the colors though and see what I can come up with. A complementing color may look good as well...
As for looking like Help Viewer's icon.. I did consider that when making it, but I couldn't really think of anything more fitting for this. A life jacket was another option, but I didn't think that metaphor was as well-established and obvious as a life ring is.
lighthouse, baywatch tower, baywatch resque floating device or an actual rubber lifeboat?
A rubber lifeboat may work.. I kept thinking Titanic-style wooden rowboats when thinking lifeboat. I'll have to see how that looks at sizes below 50 pixels square or so...
You can make a puffy, bit cartoony unrealistic stylized lifeboat maybe. You know what I mean. :)
I like that idea! Keep it Aqua style, though. But big 'n' puffy indeed.
What you got there is known as a Life Ring. Not the same thing. One allows you to be eaten from below by sharks, the other actually saves you from hypothermia.
Life> Life> Live> Living> House> House Boat!
Makes a nice icon! I have to mention though... when I was originally coming up with the icon for the helpdesk here at my college, I tried to avoid doing a life ring because I could have sworn that OS X has a life preserver ring as an icon for something. I could never really figure out where the icon was, so I figured I was just going crazy... but does anyone else know if OS X now or at any time in the past had a life preserver for an icon of some app or utility?
Yes, the Help Viewer Application that was mentioned above in one of the comments.
Here is the icon:
Ah! Right. I should probably read the other replies more carefully, hehe. Well, considering Help Viewer is in greyscale, perhaps it would be wise to give this icon a splash of color to differentiate it.
