andrew.harrison.org [again]

new design for my website. i've been toying with ideas for 18 months [some of the ideas i've posted here] but i finally think i'm getting somewhere. whole thing should be pretty self explanatory, but let me know if you have any questions.

fonts are basically set, but kerning/leading etc. haven't been toyed with properly yet.

Hey Andrew.

Nice clean design. My main suggestion would be that you need more white space. i.e.:

- your header should have more space between it and the menu bar. it feels even more crowded given that the "andrew.harrison.org" graphic is condensed.
- if you didn't have the "written" line placed between the header and the text then the spacing would be better.
- right hand column needs more vertical spacing as well.

my personal philosophy is when in doubt err on the side of too much white space. makes it easier on the eyes.

I think that having all of your text the same color will create some readability problems. Maybe if your titles and links were that orange color?

Make the titles Sans-serif and the text serif (Georgia). Colors are okay, but why the earthy earth tone brown? I definitely agree with making the header bar a little bit taller, with a more discernable separation between title and navigation.

How wide is your live area? Hopefully not more than 800 or 850. :)

It's a good start, but where's your footer? I recomment text links and legal there...

My first impression of this site is that it looks like a blog. The traditional "left entries, right bio" sort of layout. I'm assuming that is just for the home page, and the other pages will have different layouts, yes?

The thing with web design is you have only a few seconds for viewers to decide if your site is interesting enough to stay and browse the rest. From a few seconds of looking at your site, I'm going to be blunt - it's boring. There are hardly any design elements, the typography is pretty boring, the header is so small and scrunched up at the top it seems like you don't want it to be read, and the entire content seems to be floating without any weight on the bottom or sides.

MARGIN SPACE! Almost everything in the design needs more margin/padding space. It gives the design room to breathe as well as relieves that stressed/crammed feeling for the viewer.

In the navigation "forhire" looks silly, but that might be another personal opinion. Also, the text "website layout + interface design" looks quite small - what size do you have it set at? Out of curiosity, is this actually coded, or just done in Photoshop? The text doesn't look like it's in a browser.
